MESSAGE FROM THE PEW

A Message from the Pew – Red Light, Yellow Light, Green Light
As we gather at Holy Spirit Church during this Lenten season, the Church invites us to slow down, reflect, and take an honest look at our lives. Recently, while waiting at a traffic light, I was reminded how familiar those three colors are to all of us. Red means stop. Yellow means slow down and proceed with care. Green means go. Simple signs, yet they guide us safely on our journey.
This Ash Wednesday marked that red and yellow moment for us as a parish. As ashes were placed on our foreheads, we heard the words, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return,” Those words called us to pause, to stop what draws us away from God, and to begin again with humility and trust.
Now scripture reminds us, “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). Lent gives us that stillness, a sacred pause so we can listen more closely to the Holy Spirit at work in our hearts. It is also a time of action. As St. Paul tells us, “Now is a very acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2).
Here at Holy Spirit Church, that call takes shape through our Lenten ministries. Through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, we are invited to move forward together. Whether it is participating in Stations of the Cross, supporting our outreach and charitable efforts, giving of our time through parish ministries, or simply being more attentive to the needs of others, Lent gives each of us an opportunity to say “yes” to God in concrete ways.

As we continue this journey, the Church gently moves us toward the green light of Easter. A time of renewal, hope, and new life. The practices we begin now prepare our hearts for the joy of the Resurrection.
Our journey through Lent as one parish family, may we allow the Holy Spirit to guide us, knowing when to stop, when to slow down, and when to move forward in faith. Let us walk this Lenten journey together, supporting one another in prayer and service, so that when Easter comes, we may rejoice with hearts renewed and lives transformed.

HOLY SPIRIT LENTEN PARISH RETREAT
ALL ARE INVITED to the one day Lenten Parish Retreat on March 7 (Saturday) at Holy Spirit Church located at 970 Suburban Rd., Union, NJ. It starts with the 8:30 a.m. daily Holy Mass and ends at 4:00 p.m. with Private Prayer, Confession, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction.
The theme of the retreat is “Living Out the Gospels in Our Daily Lives.” Our lives become a "mirror" reflecting Christ, so much so that people see Him in us, both in difficult and ordinary moments. This means choosing love over conflict, forgiveness over bitterness, and gratitude over complaint, even when it's hard, as shown in how we interact with family, strangers, and difficult circumstances.
The registration form is in the Bulletin. The fee for the retreat is $30. Breakfast and lunch will be served. Please fill in the form and drop it off at or mail it to the Holy Spirit Parish Office at 984 Suburban Rd., Union NJ, 07083, together with your check or you can put it in the Sunday collection basket.

Feb. 8 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time , Sunday
02/08/26 12:00 am
From the Gospel for the Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A: You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father." (Mt 5:13-16)

The Roman Martyrology commemorates Blessed Pius IX (1792-1878), who reigned as pope from 1846-1878. He was the last pope to hold temporal power for the Papal States, before they were reformed. He defined the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary on December 8, 1854 and celebrated the First Vatican Council from 1869 to 1870, which defined the dogma of papal infallibility. He was beatified by Pope St. John Paul II on September 3, 2000.

Today is the Memorial of St. Paul Miki, a Japanese Jesuit, and his twenty-five companions (d. 1597), who were martyred in Nagasaki, Japan. They were the first martyrs of East Asia to be canonized. They were killed simultaneously by being raised on crosses and then stabbed with spears. Their executioners were astounded upon seeing their joy at being associated to the Passion of Christ.
